Esterline Subsidiary Takes Aircraft Electrical Distribution to the Next Level Leach International Introduces Next-generation SSPCs

BUENA PARK, CA -- In response to the continuously increasing electrical demand on board aircraft, Esterline Corporation (NYSE/ESL www.esterline.com) subsidiary Leach International has developed multi-channel, next-generation Solid-state Power Controllers (SSPCs) designed to fit into compact, microprocessor-controlled Secondary Power Distribution Units (SPDUs), according to Mark Thek, president of Leach International, North America. In addition to providing advanced circuit protection, these .smart. units also provide built-in testing to check wiring integrity and more.

Key features of Leach SSPCs are low voltage drop and power dissipation, backup wire protection and optional arc fault protection. Data bus UART, ARINC 485 and CAN (Controller Area Network) are provided at no additional cost, while ARINC 429 and Mil-Std-1553 data buses are available options. The SSPCs are configured via software-based design and provide full integration and interface with all avionics applications.

There are a number of design benefits of Leach SSPCs, including reduced part count due to the elimination of connectors, junction boxes, wires, circuit breakers and other components. Overall wire volume is dramatically reduced, while accuracy, repeatability and arc fault protection are improved.

Reporting capabilities include switch status (on, off, tripped, over-current and tripped arc fault), current reading at 100 mA resolution, output voltage, presence or absence of load, switch failure mode (open or closed), and over-current l2t trip curve.

Finally, unique to computer controlled SSPCs is the built-in test feature, which allows verification of items such as memory, power supply, trip circuit and gate signal. The continuous built-in testing (CBIT) constantly monitors temperature, memory checksum and signal integrity. There also is an integrated built-in testing (IBIT) for added protection.
